Preparing Your Yard for a New Building

How to get your yard ready for a new shed, garage or carport: clearing, access, marking, utilities and neighbors, so build day goes smoothly.

Clear the work area

Move furniture, planters, toys and anything that may be in the way. Trim low branches along the access route.

Mark any sprinkler heads, pet fences or buried items you know about.

We will mark the building footprint on the ground so you can see it.

Plan access

Gates, narrow side yards, steep slopes and overhead wires affect how materials and equipment arrive. Measure the narrowest gate.

Tell us about soft ground after rain.

We may suggest mats or timing to protect the lawn.

Call before digging

Tennessee 811 arranges marking of public utility lines. Call before any digging and give the marks time to appear.

Private lines such as irrigation, septic and outbuilding wiring may not be marked.

Tell us what you know about them.

Think about water

Notice where water runs and stands after heavy rain. A building placed in a wet spot will suffer.

We plan grading, gravel and gutters to move water away.

Photos after a storm help us a great deal.

Talk with neighbors

A quick heads-up about noise, trucks and timing goes a long way. If the building will sit near a shared fence, share the plan.

HOAs may need to see drawings first.

Good communication prevents trouble later.

Our advice in one sentence

Clear the area, call before you dig and show us where the water goes.

Questions

Quick answers.

Do I need to remove my fence?

Not always. We can often work around it or remove a section temporarily.

Will construction damage my lawn?

Some wear is likely near the work area. We protect what we can and discuss repair options.

What if I am not sure about utilities?

Call 811 and tell us what you know. We will help you plan around lines.
