Caring for Your Shed, Garage or Carport

A seasonal checklist for roofs, gutters, doors, siding, floors and drainage that helps outbuildings last longer and avoids expensive repairs.

Spring

Check the roof for storm damage, clear gutters, look at siding and caulk and test doors and locks. Inspect the base for soft spots or pests.

Trim branches that touch the roof.

Fix small problems now before summer heat and storms.

Summer

Keep vents open, check for wasps and look for signs of sun damage on paint and trim. Keep grass trimmed away from the base.

Check inside after heavy rain.

Water stains tell you something is wrong.

Fall

Clear leaves from the roof and gutters, check flashing and seal gaps before cold weather. Test heaters and detectors.

Touch up paint where it has worn.

Stack firewood well away from the building.

Winter

After storms or ice, check the roof and gutters. Keep snow from piling against doors.

Lubricate hinges and tracks.

Watch for condensation inside and ventilate when needed.

Every year

Level the building if the ground has shifted, add gravel where it has washed out and renew caulk.

Repaint or restain on schedule.

Keep a photo log so you can see changes over time.

Look at the roof, the gutters and the ground twice a year, and fix small things early.
